Visions from Silver Bay

Jonah Horton’s debut mandolin album, Visions From Silver Bay, presents the acoustic instrument in an unconventional jazz quartet setting alongside piano, bass, and drums. Recorded live over two days in December 2025 at Davidson College, the self-funded project features six original, evocative compositions and a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River,” all preserved as complete, unedited takes to emphasize human improvisation over digital perfection. Highlighting a collaborative effort across multiple artistic disciplines, the release includes mastering by legendary engineer Bernie Grundman and upcoming animated video releases by Sullivan Perry. Ultimately, the album stands as both an effort to expand the mandolin beyond its traditional bluegrass roots and a call to support independent human artistry in an era dominated by generative AI and instant streaming.
